Risa Keene to Speak at Sullivan Church
April 28 – 9:30 a.m. service

Risa and Doug Keene, Sullivan residents, recently returned to the USA having lived in Africa for a little over two years. They were in Tanzania and Uganda each for 1 1/2 months and then moved to their permanent home in Lesotho.
Lesotho is a very poor, small country, about the size of Maryland, consisting of 2 million people. It is completely surrounded by South Africa. Doug worked for LeBoHA (Lesotho Boston Health Alliance) where he taught Family Practice residents from Lesotho. In addition to this teaching and administrative position, he also did weekly clinical work in nearby communities.

Although Risa did not have a job, when they arrived she quickly became involved in different aspects of the community. She developed friendships with people she bumped into on a daily basis, learned how to weave at the Crafts Center, was a frequent visitor at the School for the Deaf, did crafts with the neighborhood kids, volunteered at Help Lesotho (a nonprofit organization in the region where they lived), assisted a special educator at the Ministry of Education and learned to speak Sesotho.

Come see and hear about their time in Lesotho, learn about this beautiful country and find out what it's like to immerse yourself in a culture that is so different than your country of origin.
